Victoria Grizzlies 2 - 3 Coquitlam Express @ Bear Mountain Area, Sept 29th, 2012

So what the hell was that. A hard fought battle by both teams, ended by a call with three mins to go in regulation that neither of the refs saw. The issue is compounded by the fact that if the Grizzlies where the offending team, why where they still allowed to keep attacking the Express in their zone for the next 52 secs. David Mazurek, was adjudged by the linesman, to have given Coquitlam’s power forward, Brady Shaw a shot to the head which the linesman caught. Now, myself and six other fans I was with had a great view of the action and saw minimal contact involving both players going back and forth. However, Brady Shaw, went down like an Argentine soccer player and after receiving some attention after the play was finally blown down; Shaw, after a little help shot up quite happily and skipped his way back to the Express bench.
This resulted in a 5 minute major and a game misconduct for Mazurek setting up the Express to score the winner on that powerplay.

This whole incident was a bad call and a disgrace to end that way, after a high tempo game from both teams, to come down to a very controversial call by the linesman.

1st Period – The Express came out looking to prove a point after Michael Stilidias stone walled them last weekend. The Grizzlies where positive in there play, but where chasing the Express for the first ten minutes of the game. McKinney, Pryzbek and Shaw tormented the Grizzlies Defence early on, but, it would be the 3rd line of Kerfoot Henning and Luca Leone who would get the scoring going after four minutes. With the Grizzlies puck watching, this allowed Leone the time to bury a shot by Stilidias to take the lead. Coquitlam have three very good lines and would add to their lead 3 minutes later when Leone would turn provider, setting up Henning for a 2-0 Express lead.

The Grizzlies would settle down a bit, with DJ Jones and the make shift line of Leo/Gerry Fitzgerald and Brett Hartskamp putting pressure on the Coquitlam goalie Huggins. The biggest line that I’ve seen suit up in Grizzlies uniforms, Lawson, Mazurak and Nicholishen looked like they had some chemistry going and had the Express under the cosh at times.

The Grizzlies continued pressure would pay off after a well worked goal would see DJ Jones, pick out AP, Justin Polishuck in acres of space, who put a perfectly placed shot over Huggins right shoulder to bring the Grizzlies back into at a 2-1 Express lead.

Credit to DeJong and Urban for some stellar penalty killing at the end of the period sending the puck back into the Express zone everytime Coquitlam  got in the Grizzlies zone on the PP

2nd Period – High tempo and a good advert for BCHL hockey with both teams playing some good attacking stuff. The line of Skbich, Walchuk and certainly Dante Hahn played well tonight creating some chances and closing down the Express in the neutral zone. And it would be Dante Hahn on the PP, who has really impressed in the this first month of the season that picked up a nice pass for Skrbich, to score the Grizzlies second goal to tie it 2-2, three minutes into the second period.

Cole Huggins and Michael Stilidias would keep their teams in it and Huggins pulled off a superb save on what could have been an excellent  scoring chance, after Stefan Nicholishen came out of the penalty box and was one on one with the Express netminder. It would remain 2-2 at the end of the second.

3rd Period – Would be marred by “that call “. It’s a shame, as both teams had chances with Myles Powell coming close for the Grizzlies and Coquitlam’s Georgeson with a nice shot which made Stilidias pull off a great save. This game should have gone into OT which would have let both teams duke it out for points at that point. That should have been the end to this game.  Not to end it with a soft call that both refs missed on minimal contact involving both players that the linesman only had an adequate view of. Common sense should have prevailed but didn’t.

One the ensuing power play the Express would score with a Callum Hoffard goal to break Grizzlie hearts and give Coquitlam a 3-2 victory.

Game Thoughts Grizzlies – This is a tough defeat to swallow. After a shaky first 10 minutes the Grizzlies settled down and competed hard for the rest of the game. In defeat this season, the Grizzlies have competed and have been in every contest of the 2012/13 season so far. A culture that Bestwick and Didmon have brought to this club. However, the Grizzlies need  secondary scoring to start to become more active/effective and quickly. The Fitzgerald’s along with D-man DeJong, Jones and Thompson have scored the bulk of the points so far. The other forwards are playing well make no mistake, but, they have to start scoring soon to ensure this team can be a contender through until April.

Stand Outs Grizzlies:

Myles Powell – Continues to improve and looks like he could become a lot more of a factor on this team with more ice time. Powell, is playing with a lot of confidence and with his speed and touch, should become more of an asset to this team.

Dante Hahn – Great positioning, good skater and can create and score. Hahn, is a smart hockey player and see the ice very well.

DJ Jones – Seems to drive the team at times and really has defenders on the heels when he leads the charge up ice. Is sound in his own zone. Could be one of the best defenders to ever suit up for the Grizzlies if this continues.

Blake Thompson – Consistent and another defenseman who plays both ends of the ice well.

Game Thought Express – By far the best Express roster I’ve seen for years with lots of scoring and a well-organized defence. In Cole Huggins they may have the best goalie in the BCHL this season. With a good mix of skill and power forwards like Shaw and Przybek, Coquitlam could be the real deal this season.

Just to add – Another good atmosphere tonight with the crowd over 1000. Giveaways during the game and Canada’s Men’s rowing silver medalists on hand to drop the puck tonight.

Attendance – 1008    Shots on Goal – Grizzlies 28 and the Express 29

Power plays – Grizzlies 1 for 1 and the Express 1 for 2

Victoria Grizzlies v's Coquitlam Express @ Bear Mtn Arena, 7:15pm, Sept 29th, 2012

The Grizzlies will be looking to bounce back on home ice tonight against the Express, as the boys look to make Bear Mountain Arena a fortress in the 2012/13 season.

On hand tonight, appearances and a salute to our Olympians and Para-Olympians from the London 2012 game.

Action starts tonight at 7:15pm

Nanaimo Clippers 4 - 2 Victoria Grizzlies @ Frank Crane Arena, Sept 28th, 2012

Article by Tony Burrows:

Tonight's game against the Nanaimo Clippers did not go as planned! First inkling that it was not going to be a good night was when the rented bus that had been bringing a full load of avid Victoria fans to cheer for the Grizzlies broke down around Chemainus and the team bus had to go and rescue our fans. They did not arrive until the beginning of the second period! Second indication of a bad hair night was when Nanaimo scored less than 3 minutes into the game. This quietened the Grizz fans that had driven up and were not on the broken bus!! Thirdly it was one of those nights when the reffing was---shall we say politely---substandard! And lastly the team did not seem to have that killer spark that I had noticed in most of the preceeding games I had seen them play. Even in the third game of last week's grueling road trip to the mainland the energy and sharpness was there. It looked like it took a holiday tonight! And I have seen Mike Stilliadis have better games also.

But on the flipside, don't let me give you the impression that it was not a great game to watch. When Leo Fitzgerald scored from Myles Fitzgerald and DJ Jones 15 minutes into the second period both teams were tied 2/2 and the shots on goal were 19 Clips and 21 Grizz. Shortly after that the wheels fell off and the game became Clippers dictating the game and the Grizzlies scrambling to keep Nanaimo's Kramer from getting behind our defense! I guess from watching the previous games I have become used to our Grizzlies dictating the play to the other team and it sucks to watch them having trouble keeping up! So, Congratulations to the Nanaimo Clippers, and may our next game against Coquitlam on Saturday night be better! Tony

The Return - Preview Grizzlies V Clippers, Frank Crane Arena, Sept 28th

In the sporting world things like success, dedication, length of service and respect are things most fans remember and hold in high esteem.
Although there are exceptions to that rule where the sports fan has a short term memory block and this includes Junior Hockey fans. But, this will not be an exception in the case of Bill Bestwick's return to the Frank Crane Arena, after 12 years of coaching the Clippers and making his family home in the Nanaimo area. Bestwick, worked hard to build well run/organized Clipper teams with much success in those 12 years. They played a hard nosed brand of hockey and where an easy team to watch for the most part. Many of Bill's former players are now applying their hockey careers in the NCAA and pro ranks which was always an attractive proposition for any potential Clipper recruit.
To this fan/blogger, the Clipper faithful I can 99% guarantee, should give Bill a warm reception with I'm sure a standing ovation. As Clippers fans didn't have the chance to say goodbye to Bill after he was released by the new Nanaimo ownership. I'm sure this will be an emotionally charged atmosphere for Bill and everyone associated with the Clipper organization.

But, with all this being said and as Bestwick put it, "he bleeds black and gold now" and will be looking for the Grizzlies to keep there good start to the season going. With, Victoria top of the Island standings with  5 Wins, 1 Loss and 1 overtime loss after 7 games. As the team has gelled nicely at this time, they will be looking to go into Frank Crane and really try and stamp there authority down on the Island division at this early stage of the season.

In Mike Vandekamp's Nanaimo team, they have also got off to a positive start, but, have only played 4 games so far with a solid 3 wins and 1 loss at this time.
After watching both Clipper games at the showcase, Nanaimo looked the part with new additions to the team such as quick/skilled forward Mike McNicholas, big bodied power forward Reid Sturos and former ex-WHLer and Nanaimo native Greg Fraser really adding to a potent Clipper attack.
In Defence, former Grizzlie player Josh Bryan, could really class himself among the leagues elite defenders, along with quality D-man Colton Dahlen and David Iacono.
In goal, new goalie Jayson Argue has been excellent so far with a stingy 1.76GAA.

Outside of Bill's return in this game, I'm looking forward to seeing a new type of Grizzlies team the Clippers have never faced. A Bill Bestwick Grizzlies team!!!

Horray!! A Bus trip to Nanaimo!! Thanks Grizz!!
Hi all you great Grizzlies fans! Sorry I could not give you more notice about this but as you know it did not look like the Grizz would be able to put together a bus and driver before the road trip to Nanaimo this Friday. But they have managed to get 2 buses lined up, a 25 seater or a full size 40(?) seater. which ever one we need. Our famous road...

HOW CAN WE NOT AFFORD TO GO UP ON THIS BUS TRIP???? GET ON IT QUICK--TIME IS SHORT--- LET'S GET LOTS OF PEOPLE FROM VIC IN NANAIMO TO SEE THE REACTION OF THE NANAIMO FANS WHEN THEY FIRST SEE BILL BESTWICK AGAIN!! AND LETS OUT-CHEER THOSE CLIPPER FANS!

Gerry Fitzgerald is the BCHL player of the week

Gerry Fitzgerald

I remember watching Gerry Fitzgerald, three years ago beat the Saanich Braves almost single handedly. I believe a 6-1/6-0 win at Pearkes that night.
Gerry, had 3 or 4 points that game and was hit and whacked multiple times from the likes of Ryan Smith, Trevor Crosby and Sam Waterfield, as well as others from that tough Braves defence. Gerry, got up each time after taking some punishing hits and was the game winner that night in a highly competitive game.
Those days, Gerry was a lone Fitzgerald wolf with Leo and Myle playing for the Oceanside Generals that season.
I remember a certain hockey parent at the time say......"that little guy is unstoppable".
Three years on, the triplets are playing some great hockey for the Grizzlies and Gerry is leading the way at this time; with an impressive 4 goals and 4 assists in 7 games and a worthy BCHL player of the week this week. He is currently 5th on the BCHL scoring list going into this weekend.

Coquitlam 1 - 2 Grizzlies @ Poirier Arena, Coquitlam, Sept 23, 2012

So to take 4 out of 6 points on a mainland swing is never an easy proposition. For the 2012/13 season, it's even more difficult as certainly in the Island and Coastal Divisions, there is more parity and depth in the rosters than I can remember in recent years.
The Express are no exception and even though at times they dominated possession and out shot the Grizzlies(first team to do so this season), Michael Stilidias stood on his head showing the quality of goaltender the Grizzlies have in this 18 yr old goalie. With Rouleau suffering from a bit of a knock, Stilidias has done well in each of his 5 starts and posting a stingy 2.20 GAA a long the way, is a great start.
With the Fitzgerald's really taking flight and showing the goal scoring threat we are coming to expect from the and the forwards ranks benefiting greatly from Hahn, Hartskamp, Skrbich and Chase Kaiser, the Grizzlies attack is as balanced and effective as I've seen for some time. Having big players that can skate and put up some points (and drop the gloves if asked) in Lawson, Nicholishen, Mazurek and Coachman is something the tema has lacked for years.
The young forwards of Walchuk, Powell, McLellan have all stepped up and will be an integral part of the roster this season.
The defence has certainly had a big role to play so far and DeJong, Jones, Thompson, Meek, Coachman and Captain Zach Urban are as good a D-core the Grizzlies have had.

So in short to lead the BCHL in points, be ranked 8th in the country by the Junior A governing body and play three very good games this last weekend........keep it coming guys!!!!!

Victoria Grizzlies 4 - 2 Chilliwack Chiefs @ Prospera Arena, Chilliwack, Sept 22

An impressive 3 points picked up on the road against Chiefs in the 'Wack' on Saturday night. Debutant David Mazurek(it says on BCHL site Jackman, but, I'm sure its Mazurek), Gerry Fitzgerald and Mr. Consistent, DJ.Jones all chipped in with two points with Nicholishen chipping in to score his first goal as a Grizzlie.
A nice performance in goal as Michael Stiliadis stopped 37 of 39 shots to build on his nice start in the BCHL. Credit to Chiefs goalie Gillam who stopped 38 on 41 shots as well.
A good road victory from a Grizzlies team who seem to gelling nicely and competing for three periods of hockey. The goals seem to flowing, the defence has been quite stingy and the Rouleau/Stiliadis combo has been solid. Even without the suspended Coachman(8 games), Powell(3 games) and Jaden Schmeisser this Grizzlies team continues to battle.
The Grizzlies will be looking to take 4 points out of 6 as they wrap up the road trip in Coquitlam this afternoon.

Attendance - 1877    Shots on Goal -  Grizzlies - 41 and the Chiefs 39
Powerplays - Grizzlies 1 for 6  and the Chiefs 2 for 4

Surrey Eagles 3-2 Victoria Grizzlies @ South Surrey Arena, Sept 21st

Article by Tony Burrows

Our usual group of very loud Grizzlies travelling fans were at the game in Surrey this evening. Things did not go as well for the Grizz as they could have despite our outshooting the Eagles about 40 to 23! The Surrey goalie Edward Dyson was outstanding and was awarded the game's first star. And he deserved it! Our Grizz pummeled him unmercifully but could only get 2 past him! Once again our awesome threesome, the Fitzgerald triplets came through for our team and they were the ones who beat Dyson for both our goals! As you know Bill Bestwick had been suspended after the fighting at the end of the game in Cowichan. So Craig Didmon
After the game I talked to several of the Surrey fans and they concurred with our Grizzlies fans that the game had been extermely thrilling and well played by both teams!
I'll get the pictures of this game up tomorrow after breakfast.
And tomorrow night it's on to Chilliwack. And Myles Powell will be playing, and Bill Bestwick will be coaching and Craig Didmon will be nursing a sore shoulder! Go Grizz Go!!!

Grizzlies 3 Game Lower Mainland Swing - Sept 21, 22, 23

Bill Bestwick Grizzlies, will be looking to keep their good start to the season going, as the black and gold embark a 3 game trip through Surrey, Chilliwack and Coquitlam this weekend.
As most BCHL teams are still finding there formula at the start of the season, you can expect three tough games as the Eagles, Express and Chiefs try to pick up the wins on there home ice. The boys will be in tough, but, they can compete against any team in this league and win!
Joining the Grizzlies on this three game swing, will be the newly acquired David Mazurek from Ontario, who will be wearing the #26 jersey.

The Opponents

Friday Night - The Surrey Eagles will host the Grizzlies at South Surrey Arena, where a well coached Matt Erhart, team always makes victories hard to come by in the neck of the woods.
With the likes of veterans in Mulcahy, Stenerson, Mackie and guys like Morley and Cameron who are both off to a slow start, but, should find there scoring touch soon; makes the Eagles a real offensive threat this season.

Saturday Afternoon - After two games at the showcase, the Grizzlies have reacquainted themselves will Prospera Arena. In Harvey Smyl' s, Chilliwack team, they will find big bodied players, who like to hit and grind out victories. In watching the Chiefs twice at the showcase, expect a battle and with guys like Plevy, Hansen, Esposito and two of the better/ more experienced D-man in the league in Thompson and Laurent, this is a tough team to play against. Mitch Gillam, the Chiefs goalie will keep the Chiefs in games this season, he is quality player. Kiefer McNaughton who's right are held by the Chiefs, was recently released by the Vancouver Giants, but, I'm unsure at this time if he's on his way to the 'Wack' or not.
This will be the Grizzlies first regular season match versus the Chiefs in Chilliwack, since the 05/06 season.

Sunday Afternoon- Jon Calvano's, Express are a quick, skillful team who work hard and make there opponents work for 3 periods. Siemer, Kerfoot, Shaw and Nardi are as good as any of the BCHL top lines this season and throw in one of the best Junior A goalies in Cole Huggins, the Express should contend this season. With the fans starting to come back to the Poirier Arena, I predict a good year for Coquitlam.
After the Express beat the Grizzles in OT on the first game of the season, Victoria will be loooking to get those 3 points back.

Grizzlies sign 20 year old forward David Mazurek

According to the the Times Colonist twitter feed, the Grizzlies have signed 20 yr old forward David Mazurek, from Brantford Ont. Mazurek, has played in over 100 OHL games and was a regular in the Kingston Frontenacs line up last season.
With 18 points last season for Kingston which he should build on in Junior A and 75 penalty minutes, it sounds like the Grizzlies have added another big bodied forward who isn't afried to mix it up.

To clear a roster spot for David, the Grizzlies are looking to trade recent arrival Reid Jackman at this time. Jackman, had played 2 games for the Grizz.

Welcome David and good luck to Reid.

Two Grizzlies players make the 2013 NHL's Central Scouting Preliminary List

Congrats to both Nolan Dejong and Dante Hahn for being two of the six BCHL player prospects to be selected in the NHL's Central Scouting preliminary futures list for the 2013 draft.
This is a great achievement for both players as they look to build on their early success in their hockey careers.

Nolan Dejong, had a tremendous rookie year last season, playing like seasoned BCHL vet rather than a 16 year old rookie. Dejong, is a defender who doesn't make a lot of mistakes, has great hockey sense and creates opportunities for the team whenever he's part of the attack. A solid two way player. With a scholarship to Cornell already tied up, at 17 the skies the limit for Nolan.

Nolan Dejong

Dante Hahn, has been a nice addition to the team this season and looks he could put up some promising numbers this year. Dante, combines his size, skill and skating and looks like a well rounded Junior player at this stage. Hahn, in his BCHL rookie year, has formed a solid second line with Hartskamp and Skrbich.
At 17, I'm sure numerous NHL and NCAA organisations are keeping an eye on Dante at this point.

NHLer Ryan O'Byrne joins the Grizzlies coaching staff

Ryan O'Byrne

The NHL lockout has just added an advantage to your Victoria Grizzlies.
Former alumni and Colorado Avalanche Defenceman, Ryan O'Byrne who played two years for the Victoria Salsa/Grizzlies from 2001-03; has joined Bill Bestwick's coaching staff as an Asst Coach while things remain in limbo between the NHL and the players.
Ryan, who was selected 3rd round, 79th overall in the 2003 NHL draft, had spent 3 years at Cornell before pursuing his NHL dream playing the last six seasons with Montreal and now Colorado.
Bestwick's comments from the A-Channel interview today, touched on how much the Grizzlies players will benefit, learning and being around an NHLer like O'Byrne

Welcome home Ryan.

Wade Murphy commits to the University of North Dakota

Former Grizzlie and current Vees superstar; Wade Murphy has committed to the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux for the 2013/14 season, after deciding against his original choice of Merrimack.
Murphy, a Victoria native has had offers from the USHL's, Green Bay Gamblers and is on the protected list of the WHL's Victoria Royals.
Wade, who was expected to to go in the last NHL draft, however ,was over looked, did get the chance to attend the Calgary Flames prospect camp this summer.

Murphy, joins former BCHL and Vees stars the McMillan brothers Mark and Mitch, with the Fighting Sioux. North Dakota are seven time national NCAA Div 1 Champions.

JESSE URSIC

At this time the Grizzlies have announced that 19 yr old defenceman Jesse Ursic has gone home  and is awaiting a trade. Since Jesse's trade from Prince George last season, he has unfortunately been riddled with injuries which has hampered his playing time.
As players Jesse size are in demand hopefully he'll catch on with another Junior A team soon.
Before Ursic came up to the BCHL he was playing with the VIJHL Oceanside Generals.

In 36 games as a Grizzlie, Jesse put together 5 points and 4 PIM. Good luck Jesse and we hope to see you back at this level soon.

Cowichan 1 - 2 Grizzlies @Island Savings Centre, Duncan, Sept 15th

The War of the Malahat has begun! 21 penalties given out for the (almost) line brawl that occured right after the game ended and one of our players received a sucker punch. His team mates jumped to his defense and there was fighting mayhem all over the ice!
But back to hockey! Despite outshooting the Caps throughout the game the boys from the wrong side of the Malahat scored first only 1.22 minutes into the game. Ryan Hanes beat our goaltender Michael Stiliadis. Great hockey followed and the 977 Cowichan fans got their money's worth with thrills, near misses, a puck off the crossbar and lots of roughing! This carried on throughout the second period which ended with the Caps ahead of our Grizz one to nothing. Period 3 started and it looked like the Grizz could not even buy a goal! It certainly was not for lack of effort! They outplayed and out shot the caps almost 2 to 1. But Derek Dun, the Caps goaltender was his awesome self and kept the Caps in the game.
At 10.45 of period 3 someone must have sent a message to the hockey Gods because they allowed Leo Fitzgerald with help from Mitch Meek, to finally beat Dun's magic goaltending! The gods must have liked what they saw because they allowed Gerry Fitzgerald to score at 13.15 with Blake Thompson's help. This turned out to be the winning goal.

The awesome threesome (The Fitzgerald triplets) always seem to come through when we need them. They are a treat to watch on the ice!
At the end of the game all hell broke loose after one of our players was sucker punched. 'The ice was one rolling mass of black and white squirming and writhing like the Green Men had done in jest the night before! I hope no one got really hurt in that melee, because it sure looked like a recipe for broken noses and teeth missing! Not to mention broken knuckles and fingers. However at the end of the bru-ha-ha it looked like all the Grizz had had a great time and even remembered to salute their EXTREMELY NOISY travelling fan contingent! (Note to you new Grizzlies players---you ain't heard nothin' yet till these loud Grizz fans REALLY start yelling! So get ready for it, these fans are rabid!!) haha.
Just so you will have an idea of what happened at the end of the game I am going to post the list of penalties handed out:
PERIOD 3 Cowichan Valley Capitals at 9:08 - Luke Sandler for Holding (2 Min.) Cowichan Valley Capitals at 20:00 - Rylan Bechtel for Fighting (5 Min.) Victoria Grizzlies 3 - 2 Powell River Kings @ Bear Mountain Arena, Sept 14th

With close to 1500 in attendance for the home opener, an electric atmosphere, the antics of the Green Men and a Grizzlies support excited about what the Bill Bestwick era has in store, where in for a real treat tonight.

As the puck dropped, you could see a Grizzlies team fresh off of a promising showing at last weekend's showcase, primed and ready for the Powell River Kings.

1st Period - Would see the Grizzlies and certainly the Fitzgeralds causing the Kings some issues early on. The Grizzlies with a confident spring in their step would take the lead, through a clinical shot from Nolan DeJong, who would score with a laser from just over the blue line leaving Powell River goalie, Imoo no chance, as the puck ended up in the top right hand corner of the net. Some nice work from the Fitzgerald's to get the puck forward to pick out DeJong for the shot. Nice screen from Zach Urban on the play as well.
The combination of DJ Jones and Thompson in defence, would close down the Kings forwards quickly and supplied plenty of ammo for the Grizzlies attack
The Kings and Grizzlies would exchange shots with Rouleau coming up with a couple of nice saves with one from a breakaway. But, it would be the Grizzlies with the Hahn, Hartskamp and Skrbich line that would create chances and put the Kings under some pressure.
The first period would end 1-0 Grizzlies.

2nd Period - The Kings would come into the game more in the second with Richardson and Scarth doing there best to pester the defence. Although the Grizzlies would continue to have the better of position and the bulk of the chances, it would be the Kings that would tie it up from a Matt Dupoint. shot after some good work from Richardson. 1-1 on the 5 mintue mark of the period at that point.
The triplets would hit the post and another high octane performance from Chase Kaiser would keep the fans enthralled as the Grizzlis tried to take the lead agian.
Credit to Kings goalie Imoo, who would come up with a couple of stellar saves to keep the game tied at 1-1 at the end of the second.

3rd Period - The Grizzlies would take it up a notch, with the Fitzgerald's causing Imoo a few more problems. However, a well coached Kings team would carve out a few chnaces midway through the third, as Matt Scarth would squeeze a shot by Rouleau, giving Powell River a 2-1 lead, against the run of play.
Victoria, weren't to be denied and after some good work and a quality pass from Nolan DeJong , he would pick out Myles Powell who would coolly score passed Imoo to tie it at 2-2. Credit to the forth line of Powell, McLellan and Richardson for their chemistry and grinding out the plays tonight. Even after some sustained Grizzlies pressure, the Kings would keep the Grizzlies at bay. Turner Lawson, after another battling perfomance in a  Grizzlies jersey, would be shown the door from the Refs, after a hit from behind on a Kings player.
Things would boil over a little, as Powell Rover would exact a little revenge against a Grizzlie player by way of Bradley Parker would cream one of out boys against the boards. At which point, new signing Stefan Nicholishen, would make himself known to his teammates and fans by landing Parker with a couple of nice shots. With the chants of Go Grizz go, the home support would rally around the white and gold.
A great play from DJ Jones to stop a Kings breakaway towards the end of the period.
But, the play of the game in dramatic style and a fitting end to the home opener, would see Leo Fitzgearld, go five-hole on Imoo, after picking up a pass form Dejong, which would see the puck just trickle through the goalies pad and sneak over the line with one second to go, making it 3-2 Grizzlies. How about that for a finish.

Game Thoughts Grizzlies - Lots of intensity tonight as the chemistry really looks like its starting to come together on this team. The Grizzlies created lots of chances and really put the Kings under a lot  of pressure throughout the game.
DJ Jones, was fantastic tonight. He was solid defensively and was really dangerous going forward, creating numerous Grizzlie scoring opportunities. Great positional player.
His partner Blake Thompson, did some nice things at both ends of the ice tonight. Looks like a great pick up.
Myles Powell, looks to be gaining in confidence and with his skill and on ice vision should become a real asset to the team this season.
Dante Hahn, works hard all game and really looks like he's clicking with Hartskamp and Skrbich.
Nolan DeJong, wow. At 17, the skies is the limit for Nolan as he plays well beyond his years. Makes smart decisions in his own end and looks very dangerous going forward with a cannon of a shot.

Overall - The crowd was really into the game tonight and what an atmosphere, to start this new chapter of the Grizzlies. An entertaining hard working game from both teams and throw in the Green Men, it was a lot of fun tonight.
If there is an NHL look out, you've got some a real quality Junior A hockey team residing at Bear Mountain Arena folks!!!

Shots on Goal - Grizzlies 36 and the Kings 19   Powerplays - Grizzlies 2 for 7 and Kings 1 for 2

Stars of the Games* Nolan DeJong      ** Jonah Imoo    *** DJ Jones

On a side note for Grizzlies fans, there was a team get together at Original Joe's after the games. lots of fans in attendance, a big round of applause for the players and Bill Bestwick and Craig Didmon taking time out to chat and get to know the fans.
The Green Men came along to and credit to these guys as they entertained, chatted up the Langford ladies and posed for some shots. Two guys chatting up women in green lyrca outfits in Langford.....wow, all the power to them.
For this blogger, the highlight of the night was getting to meet Bill Bestwick. Class act and to quote him " I'm excited and energized to coach this team".

BCHL gossip

Former Grizzlie and fan favourite Stefan Gonzales suited up for the PIJHL's, Junior B, Aldergrove Kodiak's to start the season. I'm assuming that this is until Stefan gets a trade from Oakville, to a little closer to home. With Gonzales's talent, I'm sure it won't be long until he is gracing the
BCHL/ Junior A stage again in the near future.

Alex Holland's, BCHL merry go round continues. After he was traded from the Grizzlies to the Vees, he was then sent to the Smoke Eaters where he played two games and now has been shipped to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Alex, is a solid BCHL forward and should do well in the Salmon Arm.

Speaking of Salmon Arm, Troy Mick the Head Coach/ GM of the Backs has hired former Caps Head coach, Scott Robinson to take over the coaching duties while Mick concentrates on the GM role.
In Scott Robinson, the Backs, get one of the better coaches the league has seen in the last 10 years, being very successful in Duncan, including two BCHL coach of the year awards and more recently he was Head Coach/GM of the recently defunct NAHL, Dawson Creek Rage.
